Some more stories from the road, this time coming from Will Mcmahon, a man yet to experience the nitty gritty of the camping world until now! Will hit the road, travelling through Australia with his partner.
Follow their story below:
“I am thirty something and have never been camping. Yeah, that’s right, I grew up in Western Pennsylvania and never went camping. But I think the reason why is because I was secretly waiting to go “Wicked Camping.”
Australia, New Zealand, Italy, and England are blessed with these little refurbished (I use the term lightly) vans called “Wicked Campers”. They look as if they may have been shuttle vans for the airport in their former lives.
The vans are repainted in bright colors, with artwork writing on the sides and back. One of my favorites says “It’s not that I’m too old, your music really does suck.”
These campervans are nothing I would recommend to families as the dashboard warns “do not swerve for F-ing kangaroos,” or anyone who does not want to worry that the key has fallen out of the ignition but the camper is still running, or that the odometer says 303K. Otherwise, they are wicked fun.
Anytime we passed other wicked drivers, on the wrong side of the road, we all would beep and wave. Or at least I waved, since WS was too busy trying to drive stick with the opposite hand.
And camping… camping is something that I like! We met so many nice people, including “Team Melbourne” that helped push our “Wicked” out of the mud (don’t ask). The campgrounds were beautiful, and have been the only place in Australia that we found free wireless. Go figure. Go wicked!
P.S. Our travel game resumes on July 1! Try and guess where we are off to next when we post the clues(s) July 1.
