A Wicked’ee by the name of Faye K hit us up recently, giving us an insight into her roadtrip experience earlier in the year. Faye left Melbourne on the 9th March 2011 and headed straight through the middle, up to Darwin and back down the east coast. An unforgettable trip lasting until the 14th April 2011.
Check it out here:
“Our adventure really started the moment we found ‘WICKED’ campers were cheaper than the rest, and the fact that we were dying to get away from hectic and what can be sometimes stressful public transport. Being backpackers from England we wanted to see as much as possible for as little as possible and well, we definitely achieved that!
Our pick up date was the 19th March from Melbourne, I was a little apprehensive about the trip, driving a manual [something I haven’t driven for 3years] I was scared that id bunny hop my way out of the parking lot. But upon receiving the keys to Trusty ‘Kill Uma’, starting her engine and pulling off in one clean motion i knew we were going to be ok. ‘Kill Uma’ is a classic camper, fit for two people, she has a fold-a-way table in the back which provided storage and a bed.
“A camper van is worth the memories“
In the very back was a sink, some cooking equipment including a camp stove an esky and two chairs and table for outside. The decor was littered with little notions from previous drivers and the outside was a tad battered but still uniquely beautiful and super cool. Our plan wasn’t set in stone which I think is the best way to do it but we knew we wanted to go from Melbourne through the centre with a stop off at Uluru, up to Darwin and then down the east coast finishing in Brisbane, and we had 27days to do so.
Campervans are such useful little things, we drove until it started to get dark and then pulled over in a night rest stop by the road, made dinner and crashed. There was no: tent pitching, searching for rooms in hostels just pull up and sleep. An extra added bonus is that you’ll never lose the van in the car parks either; their large graffiti art makes them stand out. So practical stuff aside, a camper van is worth the memories… stopping while a cow makes up its mind whether it wants to stay in the middle of the road or actually cross it. Staying in the loneliest places.
“So if you are sitting at the computer wondering if you should rent a Wicked camper, JUST GO FOR IT”
The honks from other drivers and the waves from pedestrians. The panic that comes from finding a road closed. Driving through water logged roads and hoping you haven’t misjudged the depth. Trying to avoid the overpriced petrol stations in the middle of no-where. And waiting at the constant roadworks. Driving through the swarm of locusts, dragonflies and hoping that they dont work their way into the car.
Well, there’s the tall and short of our trip, however I’m leaving the majority of the details out, as this is our adventure and you should go off and do your own.
So if you are sitting at the computer wondering if you should rent a Wicked camper, JUST GO FOR IT. Get behind that wheel and have your own adventure, get lost in the outback or a crazy city. See things that getting around on a bus or train you just can’t see.”
