Hervey Bay to Airlie Beach Rentals Available NOW!

The heat is on – its time to migrate up north!
There once was a time when the only way from Airlie Beach to Hervey Bay was via a very loooong, uncomfortable and grueling 11 hour bus journey overnight. Travellers who took this bus missed out on some epic fun times and great stops. That was only a year and a half ago.
Not anymore folks. Wicked Campers has conveniently opened up depots in both Airlie Beach and Hervey Bay making it SUPER easy for you to pickup your Hervey Bay campervan and roadtrip it along this very cool stretch of the East-Coast.
You’ll be driving up or down the Bruce Highway in Queensland, passing some great little spots on your way. Below are some extraordinary places to visit on the way. Ideally you should give yourself at least 7 days for your budget campervan roadtrip from Hervey Bay to Airlie Beach.

Ok, so what do I miss out on if I take the bus?
If you start in Hervey Bay, we’re assuming that you’ve hopped on the ferry to Fraser Island – if not MAKE SURE YOU GO before leaving Hervey Bay! Lots of packaged camping tours are available for 2-3 nights on Fraser Island; or you can hire your own 4x4 vehicle and drive yourself over some sand dunes to Lake Mackenzie, snorkel with the old shipwreck and sleep under the stars.
After picking up your cheap campervan from our Hervey Bay depot, take a detour down south to Rainbow Beach, try your hand at fishing and then drive up to Tin Can Bay. The attractive drive passes plenty of fantastic landscape scenery along the way and Tin Can Bay is one of only three places around the whole of Australia, where you can officially hand feed dolphins in the wild.
The drive from Tin Can Bay to Bundaberg (affectionately known to locals as ‘Bundy’) takes approximately three hours. Bundaberg is famous for two things, sugar cane and Bundaberg Rum. Take a tour at the Bundaberg Rum distillery which is relatively cheap and includes free samples. If you’re looking for something to do in the evening, why not leave your campervan rental in the campsite and visit the pub. In Bundaberg, the Great Barrier Reef begins with coral reefs fringing the shoreline and two coral cays, Lady Elliot and Lady Musgrave Islands.
Continue north along the Bruce Highway for a couple of hours to Agnes Water and the Town of 1770. Previous customers have described it as, ‘staying in paradise,’ and in all honesty, you wont get much closer. With glorious beaches, pristine ocean and great surf, Agnes Water is the perfect place to relax. Park your Australian budget campervan in one of the stunning national parks for only $5/night!
From Agnes Water continue to cruise up the east coast and eventually you will reach Rockhampton. Rockhampton is a larger town in comparison to Emu Park and Yeppoon but all have something to offer. In Rockhampton you will find more mainstream shopping and pubs and bars but in Emu Park, you could park your campervan at the new luxury backpackers resort, Emu’s Beach Resort with magnificent hosts Paul and Mandy.
Up along the Bruce Highway is Mackay, a vibrant exciting tropical city, booming from the richness of sugar and mining. The Mackay Region has thirty one beaches for you to visit and explore where you can enjoy leisurely walks, swimming, and fishing or just sit and watch the kiteboarders and windsurfers ride up and down the water. Your self-drive campervan rental could drive you to all these spots! Some of the region’s best beaches include Eimeo Beach, Blacks Beach, Shoal Point, Harbour Beach and the spectacular beach at Cape Hillsborough National Park, where the rainforest literally meets the sea.
Further north is your final destination – the gateway to the Whitsundays, Airlie Beach. What a town! Beaches Backpackers and Magnum’s Backpackers are great places to chill out, eat and drink with great deals on jugs of beer and buy one get one free pizzas. Don’t stay out too late though, as the next day is your day dedicated to the Whitsunday Islands.
