Campervan Roadtrip

Don't have a clue about roadtripping in Australia? Read this article for some useful travelling tips!

Tips for the Great Australian Roadtrip

  • Don’t over-plan your trip – yes it’s good to brainstorm and jot down which places/landmarks/pubs you’d like to visit, but the best places you’ll find are usually suggested by people you meet on the road. Never underestimate the power of information you receive through word of mouth! Have some flexibility in your itinerary and remember the Wicked Roadtrip Philosophy: “We believe in the experience of the roadtrip, it can change the way you see yourself, the world, and the people around you. It’s about getting something out of the journey itself, rather than worrying about how fast you can get to your destination; what’s the hurry? A roadtrip is a philosophy of life, a way of learning about yourself, an experience, a way to test yourself, a way to grow up...the possibilities are endless!”
  • Australia is a bloody huge country and you can’t drive from Alice Springs to Adelaide in just a day. Driving itself is quite exhausting and whilst our vehicles allow you to take unlimited km’s, we suggest you stick to driving no more than 250km/day. Remember to Stop, Revive and Survive - take a break from driving every two hours.
  • Music – bring loads and loads of music. Each camper comes with a CD player and our Premium Campers have an ipod adapter (you’ll need to provide the cable though) for you. We ran a survey a couple of months back and these were the most popular roadtrip songs:
    • Top Ten Roadtrip Songs:
    • Beautiful Day – U2
    • Black Betty – Spiderbait
    • Bat out of Hell – Meat Loaf
    • 500 Miles – The Proclaimers
    • Anything by AC/DC
    • Bohemian Rhapsody – Queen
    • American Pie – Don McLean
    • Hit the Road Jack – Ray Charles
    • On the Road Again – Willie Nelson
    • Born To Be Wild – Steppen Wolf
  • Check your camper’s oil and water every morning. Your Wicked depot staff will show you how – ask questions if you’re still confused!
  • Rest Stops – Learn about them quickly and you’ll save a lot of money… they’re all over Australia and you can park there for FREEEEEEE! Look for the (i) sign.
  • Learn how to use the storage in your campervan: You have limited space in your campervan so use it well! Pop the items you use the most up the front of the camper (i.e. towels, toiletries, dry food items, bottles of vodka) and store the other stuff closer to the back. If you’re lazy just leave the bed prepared during the day and chuck all your gear underneath in the storage space.
  • Take advantage of the fact that you’re on a self-drive trip and you can visit some places off the beaten track. There are tons of usual travel spots but some quirky destinations include:
    • Hutt River Province, WA – A separate country from Australia with their own rulers - Hutt River has its own currency and you can even get your passport stamped here!
    • Platypus Bush Camp, Finch Hatton Gorge, QLD – Meet Wazza, the owner of the bush camp and a true blue Australian character.
    • Kinglake, Victoria – Check out one of the buildings in town which is constructed entirely out of bottles; 13569 bottles to be exact. This town is located 1.5 hours north-east of Melbourne.
