Day 6 – Explore Flinders Ranges.
Relax or go hiking up mountains.
Day 7 Wilpena Pound – William Creek via Oodnadatta Track. Approx 450km
Head north out of Flinders Ranges via Marree to William creek.
William Creek is smallest town in South Australia, with an iconic outback pub an airstrip and a campground.
Approx 220 km on dirt road, Oodnadatta Track. No Facilites in between Marree and William Creek, so for safety reasons should convoy the drive.
On the way we go past Lake Eyre, would be great to have a big group cricket game on the salt lake.
Day 8 – William Creek to Coober Pedy. Approx 170 km.
Spend the day exploring the unique underground Opal mining town.
There’s a big underground bunkhouse in town called Umoona. We should be able to get beds on the cheap. They may also include a mine tour in the price of accommodation. Great experience to sleep underground like the locals.
Day 9 – Coober Pedy to Yulara. Approx 720 km.
Big drive up the highway to Yulara campground, just outside Uluru.
Day 10
Spend day at Uluru, base walk or climb the big one, sunset at the rock then spend the rest of the day in the campground swimming pool, sunset viewing areas then the Outback bar at Yulara.
Day 11
Drive out to Kata Tjuta (The Olgas), in the morning, awesome Valley of the Winds walk. Walk takes approx 2-3 hours, then drive out to Kings Canyon. Approx 280 km.
Kings Creek Station is about 40 km before Kings Canyon and is fun place to stay at.
Activities include quadbikes, camel rides, helicopter flights, harley rides
Day 12 – (Last Day) Kings Canyon to Alice Springs approx 470km
Spend the morning hiking Kings Canyon. Bring bathers, in the middle of walk is the ‘Garden of Eden’, beautiful natural waterhole you can swim in. After hike take the long road into Alice Springs.
Drive back Luritja rd to Lasseter Highway to Erldunda, then north to Alice Springs via Stuart Highway. The temptation will be to take the Mereenie loop and go into Alice via the Western Macdonnell Ranges, but road is shit. Also when heading back along Luritja rd, the Ernest Giles rd cuts across to Stuart Highway, but road is also terrible and never gets graded. Its more km’s but better on vehicles and easier to go back the long way.
All up it will be the trip of a lifetime, with people loving it. Roughly about 3500km through the deserts via some of Australia’s biggest landmarks.
