Campervan vs Motorhome: Which Is Right for Your Road Trip?
By Wicked Campers · Published
Planning a road trip but can’t decide between a campervan and a motorhome? We get it. Both will get you out there, but they are built for pretty different experiences.
Whether you’re planning a weekend escape or a big Australian road trip, choosing the right vehicle can make a huge difference.
So.. campervan vs motorhome: which one wins? Here’s the honest breakdown.
Putting it Simply
A campervan is a regular van kitted out for life on the road. Think bed in the back, cooking equipment, storage and other essentials you need to survive on the road. It's easier to drive, compact and great for travellers who wanna explore off-the-beaten-path locations where larger vehicles might struggle.
A motorhome, on the other hand, is bigger. Think more like a small truck that someone converted into a house. You’ll normally have a bed, bathroom, kitchen and lots of storage and living space. It's basically a home on wheels (just minus the mortgage).
The Key Differences
| Campervan | Motorhome | |
|---|---|---|
| Size | Smaller and easier to handle | Larger and bulkier |
| Driving | Easy to get around especially in cities and narrow roads | Takes a little more skills and getting used to |
| Fuel | Generally uses less fuel | Bigger vehicle = bigger fuel bill |
| Parking | Easy to park almost anywhere you can fit a car | Could be tough in busy areas |
| Living space | Pretty compact | Much more room to stretch out |
| Bathroom | Depends on the vehicle | All motorhomes include one |
| Storage | Limited, depending how much you pack | Plenty of storage |
| Cost | More budget-friendly | More expensive |
| Best for | Couples, friends and budget conscious travellers | Families and premium travelers |
Why choose a campervan?
If you're the kind of traveller who thinks "I'll be spending most of my time outside anyway", a campervan could be your perfect match. They are easy to drive around cities, winding roads, smaller car parks and those suspiciously narrow roads that somehow made it onto Google Maps.
And flexibility? That’s where campervans really shine. See a beach you want to check out? Stop. Find a hiking trail? Pull over. Spot a random roadside attraction that looks questionable but you absolutely need to investigate? Obviously, stop.
With a campervan, flexibility and spontaneous detours are much easier. At least you are not embarrassing yourself trying to manoeuvre a small apartment through a tiny car park just because you fancied a snack.
Campervans are also budget-friendly, with lower fuel costs and plenty of camping options that won't burn a hole in your pocket. Australia also has public toilets dotted across towns, parks, rest stops and even some pretty remote spots, so if you're happy to use a long-drop toilet every now and then, you might not need a toilet inside your campervan. That means more money left for food, activities and the occasional completely unnecessary cutesy purchase.
Why choose a motorhome?
SPACE. If having room to stretch out, cook proper meals and have all your stuff organised matters to you, a motorhome can be worth the extra size.
They are designed to feel more like a home. This comes in handy when travelling with kids or a larger group. They also usually come with more storage, so you can bring the surfboard, extra camping gear, five pairs of shoes and whatever else you’ve convinced yourself is absolutely essential.
Then there are the bathroom facilities. Many motorhomes come with onboard toilets and showers. For some, it's a complete game changer when you are travelling away from the major cities or spending a lot of time on the road.
The Ultimate Choice…
Now comes the big question: what kind of road trip do you actually want?
If you’re looking for a spontaneous adventure, want to keep things flexible and don’t want to blow your entire budget on getting from A to B, a campervan is for you.
But if you’re the kind of person who likes having plenty of space, wants all the comforts of home and would rather not negotiate who gets the last 10cm of sleeping space, a motorhome might be the better choice.
At the end of the day, there’s no right or wrong answer. It all comes down to how you want to travel.
According to us?
We are definitely biased! But have you seen our vans?
There's nothing better than just throwing your bags in a campervan, grabbing some snacks and seeing where the road takes you. We are all about keeping things flexible, making spontaneous stops, pulling over whenever something looks cool and finding those places you’d never get to from the hotel room.
Sure, a motorhome has more space and probably a few more home comforts. But do you really need all that when you could have four wheels, a bed, your favourite people and freedom to just go?
We’ll take the campervan. Every. Single. Time.

Is a campervan or motorhome better for couples?
For most couples, a campervan is a better choice. You're sharing a smaller space, but you're also getting a vehicle that's easier to drive, easier to park and often more affordable.
Can you sleep anywhere in a campervan in Australia?
Not quite. While a campervan gives you freedom to take your bed wherever you go, you can’t just park up and sleep anywhere in Australia. Camping and overnight parking rules vary between state, council and specific locations. Always read the signs and check rules before you park up. Campervans don’t need powerpoints, compared to motorhomes, so it is a lot easier to camp wherever you’re allowed to.
Are campervans more fuel efficient than motorhomes?
Generally, yes. They are smaller and lighter than motorhomes, so they typically use less fuel. That can make a big difference if you are taking a longer trip covering hundreds of kilometers.
Is a campervan a good option for first-time road trippers?
Absolutely. Campervans are compact making them easier to drive, park and get used to than motorhomes. You might have less space than a motorhome, but if you're spending most of your time exploring rather than sitting inside, a campervan can be the perfect way to get your first taste of life on the road.
