1. Prep Your Beast

Before hitting the open road:

  • Check the Essentials: Ensure oil, coolant and other fluids are topped up. If you have never checked a car’s fluids, this is the perfect opportunity to become an expert!
  • Tire Talk: Inspect tires for wear and proper inflation. All of our vehicles have one spare tyre in case of emergency.
  • Lights & Indicators: Confirm all are functioning correctly.
  • Stock Up: Carry ample water (at least 10L per person) and snacks, especially for remote stretches.

2. Master the Road Rules

Australia's driving norms might differ from what you're used to:

  • Keep Left: Always drive on the left side. A good little trick is to make sure the driver is in the centre of the road, not the vehicle though, surely you get what we mean!
  • Buckle Up: Seat belts are mandatory for all passengers. Australia has sneaky little cameras everywhere to spot the naughty kids without seat belts on and trust us, the fine money is better spent on traveling.
  • Speed Limits: Urban areas typically have a 50 km/h limit, while highways range between 100–110 km/h. Adjust your speed on windy roads and when turning sharp corners, especially with a HiTop van.

3. Plan Like a Pro

Australia's vastness means:

  • Fuel Up: Plan fuel stops; stations can be hundreds of kilometers apart.
  • Stay Connected: Inform someone about your route and expected arrival times.
  • Navigation: Use GPS or reliable maps to stay on track. Download the offline maps for remote areas, there’s no wifi out in the bush!
  • Better to ask for permission, than ask for forgiveness: ask our reservation team if you’re planning to go out into the bush. You need our permission to travel to certain remote areas.

4. Rest is Best

Long drives can be draining:

  • Regular Breaks: Stop every two hours to stretch and refresh. Perfect excuse to get a pie at the servo!
  • Driver Swap: If possible, alternate drivers to combat fatigue. For those solo traveling legends, find yourself a sidekick for the road trip, it might become a beautiful romance!
  • Listen to Your Body: If drowsy, pull over and rest. That’s why campers are the best, you have your bed with you at all times.

5. Wildlife Watch

Australia's fauna is unique and unpredictable:

  • Peak Activity: Dawn and dusk are when animals are most active. This is why we don’t allow driving at night, don’t be that guy!
  • Stay Alert: Keep an eye out for kangaroos, wombats, emus and the odd drunk bogan on a bike.
  • Avoid Swerving: If an animal crosses, brake in a controlled manner. Another reason not to be a Speedy Gonzales!

6. Weather & Road Conditions

Be prepared for nature's surprises:

  • Check Forecasts: Stay updated on weather conditions. It might be sunny in the morning and feel like a monsoon hit you in the arvo.
  • Unsealed Roads: Drive cautiously; maintain speeds below 80 km/h.
  • Flood Warnings: Never drive through floodwaters; turn back and find an alternative route.

7. Stay Connected

Remote areas can mean limited reception:

  • Emergency Gear: Consider a satellite phone for emergencies.
  • Charge Up: Carry portable chargers and keep devices powered. Australian nature is magic, but you can’t just plug your iPhone into a gumtree.
  • Know Your Surroundings: Be aware of the nearest medical facilities and service stations.
  • Download offline maps when you have service or wifi.

8. Respect the Land & its People

Travel responsibly:

  • Local Communities: Respect customs, traditions and follow local guidelines.
  • Leave No Trace: Dispose of waste properly and avoid disturbing wildlife. We all want that perfect Roo shot, but if you annoy them they’ll go all Mike Tyson on you!
  • Stay on Track: Stick to designated roads and paths to protect ecosystems, and cause we don’t allow any off road with our vans.

9. Campervan-Specific Tips

Make the most of your Wicked Camper:

  • Camping Spots: Use designated camping areas and caravan parks. Use apps like CamperMate and WikiCamps.
  • Power Management: If your van has solar panels, park in the sun; otherwise, run the engine regularly to recharge.
  • Device Charging: Limit charging to driving hours to conserve battery.

Hit the road, unleash your wild side—but don’t be a muppet. Stay sharp, drive safe, and keep the chaos fun (not fatal). Your epic Wicked adventure starts here.
